About this place
The Seoul branch of the Guadalupe Missioners is a community of missionary priests at 58 Tojeong-ro 4-gil in Mapo-gu, Seoul. Founded in Mexico, the society takes Our Lady of Guadalupe as its patron and has the specific mission of sending missionaries beyond their home country to serve local Churches and cultures.
In Korea, Guadalupe missionaries have served since the 1960s in parishes, hospitals, schools, and social ministries. The Seoul house functions as a base for missionary community life, support, formation, and benefactor activities rather than as an ordinary territorial parish.
History & origins
The Guadalupe Missioners arose from the Mexican bishops' desire to send missionaries abroad and were formally founded at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico on October 7, 1949. Inspired by Our Lady of Guadalupe, the society was established to send missionaries to local Churches in other parts of the world and expanded its overseas mission during the 1950s.
Its Korean mission began in 1962. The first missionaries arrived that year, studied the language and culture, and in 1963 began parish ministry in the Yeosu area of the Archdiocese of Gwangju before expanding to other regions. A Seoul branch is currently registered in Hapjeong-dong, but its exact local opening date is not publicly documented, so neither 1949 nor 1962 is treated as the foundation date of the Seoul house.
