About this place
Guui-dong Catholic Church, officially listed as “Guui-dong (Ji)” in the Seoul Archdiocese directory, is a parish of Seongdong–Gwangjin District 8 at 8 Jayang-ro 33-gil in Gwangjin-gu. It was established on April 20, 1977, after separating from Hwayang-dong Parish, and is dedicated to the Resurrection of Christ.
The parish's official history records its designation in 1998 as the district-head parish of District 8. It later became a mother parish for newer communities including Gwangjang-dong, playing an important role in the growth of the Church in Gwangjin.
History & origins
Guui-dong Parish took shape in April 1977 as it separated from Hwayang-dong Parish. Its first pastor, a Columban missionary, arrived on April 7, and the parish was established on April 20 with 368 households and 1,152 Catholics. The first church was completed and dedicated by Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan on October 16 that year.
In 1984 pastoral responsibility passed from the Missionary Society of St. Columban to the Archdiocese of Seoul. The parish later acquired its present site, built a new church, and dedicated it on October 19, 1991. In 1998 it was designated the district-head parish of District 8, and in 2000 Gwangjang-dong Parish separated, receiving the records of 1,183 households and 3,432 Catholics.
