About this place
The International Catholic Church is a parish of the Seoul Archdiocese's Jung-gu–Yongsan District 1 at 90 Hannam-daero in Yongsan-gu. Established on August 25, 1977, under the patronage of St. Francis, it has a special pastoral mission for foreign Catholics living in Seoul, taking account of different languages and cultural backgrounds.
Today Catholics from several language communities participate in Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish life. Rather than serving only one nationality, it functions as an international parish connecting a diverse foreign Catholic population in Seoul.
History & origins
The foreign Catholic community in Seoul became a formally organized parish with the establishment of the International Parish in August 1977. In its early years it worshipped at the Franciscan friary church in Jeong-dong and moved to Jeoldusan Church in February 1984.
In July 1985 the community moved again to the Conventual Franciscan monastery church in Hannam-dong, and in 1987 a formal arrangement placed pastoral responsibility with the Conventual Franciscans. The parish later developed into a multilingual community as Seoul became increasingly international. This historical Franciscan role is preserved without assuming that the same pastoral arrangement continues unchanged today.
