About this place
Gonghang-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Seoul Archdiocese's Gangseo District 17 at 9 Songjeong-ro in Gangseo-gu. It was established on December 14, 1966, after separating from Dangsan-dong Parish, and has St. Francis of Assisi as its patron.
The parish serves Catholics in Gonghang-dong and nearby neighborhoods through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. It developed from an earlier mission community as the area around Gimpo Airport grew and continues to draw on the Gospel simplicity and fraternity associated with St. Francis.
History & origins
The predecessor of Gonghang-dong Parish was the Banghwa-ri mission community formed in the Gonghang area in the 1950s. It was first under Gimpo Parish and later under Dangsan-dong Parish, while local Catholics worked to secure a nearby worship space and pursue parish status.
By the mid-1960s the community had acquired land and established facilities for regular worship, and on December 14, 1966, it separated from Dangsan-dong Parish to become Gonghang-dong Parish. This date is consistently recorded in reliable Catholic sources as the formal establishment of the parish.
