About this place
Gongdeok-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Seoul Archdiocese's Seodaemun–Mapo District 2 at 15-1 Mapo-daero 14-gil in Mapo-gu. It was formed in August 1969 from Catholics of neighboring parishes including Jungnim-dong, Yongsan, and Ahyeon-dong, and is dedicated to Christ the King.
The parish serves Catholics in Gongdeok and Singongdeok through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. From its earliest period it received assistance from Columban missionaries and later developed forms of local social service, including care for older people.
History & origins
Before Gongdeok Parish was established, local Catholics attended several neighboring parishes including Jungnim-dong, Yongsan, Cheongpa-dong, and Ahyeon-dong. In March 1969 parishioners began organizing a new “Mapo Parish” and, with help from the local Columban superior, acquired land.
Official and historical sources differ on the exact date. The current Catholic Church Directory lists August 10, 1969, as the establishment date, while the Catholic Encyclopedia records August 28 as the date of archdiocesan authorization for the new Gongdeok Parish. The first floor of the church was completed that December, a second floor was added in 1971, and the church was dedicated on May 19, 1972.
