History & origins

Preparations for Gocheok-dong Parish began in December 1990 when a parish-establishment committee was formed at Oryu-dong Parish. Work on temporary church facilities in the Jinan Building began in April 1991, and the first Mass at Gocheok Mission Station was celebrated on Pentecost Sunday, June 9.

The official records preserve several distinct dates. The Catholic Church Directory lists August 23, 1991, as the establishment date, while the parish chronology describes August 23 as parish authorization, September 4 as establishment approval and the arrival of the first pastor, and September 5 as the transfer of Catholics from neighboring parishes. The parish's current overview uses September 5 as its establishment date, so these stages are not collapsed into one event.
