About this place
Gildong Catholic Church is a parish of the Seoul Archdiocese's Gangdong District 9 at 296 Myeongil-ro in Gangdong-gu. It was established on August 30, 1985, after separating from Cheonho-dong Parish, and its patronal feast is the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The parish serves all of Gildong and parts of Myeongil-dong through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. Its patronal devotion reflects the parish's aspiration to care for people who are suffering or in need and to share love within the local community.
History & origins
Gildong Parish was established on August 30, 1985, after separating from Cheonho-dong Parish. The new community initially worshipped in temporary facilities while preparing a permanent church for the growing Catholic population of Gildong and Myeongil-dong.
The church at the present site was completed in May 1991 and blessed by Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan. After later renovation in response to the aging building and changing pastoral needs, the renewed church was dedicated by Cardinal Andrew Yeom Soo-jung in December 2016. The 1985 parish establishment, 1991 church, and 2016 renovation dedication are distinct stages.
