History & origins

The roots of the Sisters of Christian Education lie in the educational mission begun by Fr. Jean Vatelot for poor girls in the Lorraine region of France in the early eighteenth century. The Catholic Church Directory gives 1720 as the congregation's foundation year, while the congregation's official history describes the opening of a school in Bruley in 1722 as an important step in making that mission concrete.

The community later developed through Church recognition and reorganization into a religious congregation devoted to education and entered Korea on September 17, 1966. A novitiate now operates in Pyeongchang-dong, but its exact local opening date is not publicly documented. The French origins of 1720–1722 and the 1966 Korean arrival are therefore not treated as the foundation date of this particular novitiate.
