About this place

The Secular Institute of the Missionaries of the Kingship of Christ has its Korean community office at 13 Jeongdong-gil in Jung-gu, Seoul. Unlike a convent-based religious congregation, its women members continue their professions and ordinary social lives while living consecrated life according to the evangelical counsels in the midst of the world.

Rooted in Franciscan spirituality, members seek to witness to the kingship of Christ through daily life, work, and human relationships and to transform the world in the spirit of the Gospel. This place is therefore best understood as the Korean base of a secular institute, not as an ordinary parish church or residential convent.

History & origins

The Secular Institute of the Missionaries of the Kingship of Christ began on November 19, 1919, when Armida Barelli gathered eleven women at San Damiano in Assisi. The institute developed a form of consecrated vocation lived within ordinary secular conditions, with members seeking the sanctification of the world from within; it received pontifical approval on July 12, 1948.

The institute entered Korea on March 25, 1962. Its Korean community is now based in Jeong-dong, but 1919 is the foundation date of the international institute and 1962 its arrival in Korea, not the opening date of the present Jeong-dong office.
