About this place

The Seoul motherhouse of the Brothers of Christ is a men's religious community at 103-7 Yeonhui-ro 41ga-gil in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul. Founded in Korea in 1981, the congregation places service to Christ in people who are poor and marginalized at the heart of its religious life and apostolate.

The brothers combine common prayer and community life with ministries supporting persons with disabilities, older people, homeless people, and others in need. This location is not an ordinary parish but the congregation's Seoul motherhouse and a center of religious community life and service.

History & origins

The Brothers of Christ were founded on May 10, 1981, in Korea out of the apostolic work of Fr. Aloysius Schwartz among people living in poverty. From the beginning, the brothers understood religious life as living with and serving people affected by poverty, illness, disability, and social exclusion.

The congregation later developed a range of welfare and self-reliance ministries for persons with disabilities, older people, homeless people, and others in need. Its Seoul motherhouse in Hongeun-dong now serves as a center of community life. In this case, 1981 is the foundation date of the congregation itself in Korea, not a congregation-wide date incorrectly applied to a later local branch.
