About this place
Geumho-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Seoul Archdiocese's Seongdong–Gwangjin District 8 at 36 Musumak 18-gil in Seongdong-gu. It was established on September 8, 1962, the feast of the Nativity of Mary, and its present patronal title is Pentecost.
The parish separated from Sindang-dong Parish and has served Catholics throughout the Geumho area through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. It first honored the Presentation of Mary, but changed its patronal title to Pentecost when a new church was completed in 1968.
History & origins
Geumho-dong Parish was established on September 8, 1962, through the efforts of Catholics in the postwar Geumho area to create a local church. The first Mass was celebrated on November 18 in a temporary chapel adapted from an existing facility, and the growing community then prepared a permanent church.
Groundbreaking at the present site took place on June 2, 1968, and the church was completed on November 24, when the patronal title changed from the Presentation of Mary to Pentecost. A later rebuilding produced the present church, dedicated by Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan on March 12, 1995. Parish establishment, first Mass, the 1968 church, and the 1995 dedication are distinct stages.
