Geumho 1ga-dong (Mission) Parish is the Saetmaru Mission Parish operated by the Committee for Urban Poor Ministry of the Archdiocese of Seoul. Located at 61-9 Nangye-ro in Seongdong-gu, it differs from a conventional territorial parish by centering its ministry on basic Christian community life and solidarity with people experiencing poverty.
“Saetmaru” is the community name of the mission parish, not the name of a patron saint. The parish gives priority to people in poverty and works with local residents through community organizing, cooperatives, self-reliance, and care, extending that outreach through Seongdong Peace House.
History & origins
The roots of Geumho 1ga-dong Mission Parish lie in the eastern Seoul mission station and basic-community ministry organized by the archdiocesan Committee for Urban Poor Ministry in 1994. In the late 1990s, amid the financial crisis, redevelopment, unemployment, and housing insecurity, the urban mission-station model was developed into a more explicit mission-parish system.
The Catholic Church Directory and a contemporary 1999 Catholic Times report record February 18, 1999, as the creation of Geumho 1ga-dong Mission Parish. The current committee history instead summarizes the establishment as occurring in March 1999. The public text follows the contemporaneous establishment record and directory while preserving the discrepancy in the research note.
