History & origins

The Claretian Missionaries were founded by St. Anthony Mary Claret and fellow priests at Vic, Spain, on July 16, 1849. From the founder's missionary zeal, the congregation expanded into biblical and pastoral ministry, formation, education and publishing, justice and peace, and other forms of evangelization.

The Korean mission began in 1982. The Catholic Church Directory gives September 1982 as the arrival period, while the Catholic Encyclopedia describes the first missionaries arriving in October, so the public text keeps the date at the year level. A Korean community took fuller shape in 1985, and a Seongbuk-dong base was developed by 1988. The exact opening date of the Mission Center at 104 Seongbuk-ro is not publicly established and is not equated with the congregation's Korean arrival.
