About this place

Geoyeo-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Seoul Archdiocese's Songpa District 10 at 9 Yangsan-ro in Songpa-gu. It was established on October 5, 2001, and is dedicated to the Korean Martyrs.

The parish serves Catholics of Geoyeo 1- and 2-dong through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. It began after separating from Macheon-dong Parish and worshipped first in a tent church before developing its present church, with the faith of the Korean Martyrs at the center of its identity.

History & origins

Preparations for Geoyeo-dong Parish took shape in June 2000 when Macheon-dong Parish secured land for a church in Geoyeo. On October 5, 2001, the new parish was established with 797 households and 1,762 Catholics transferred from Macheon, and its first Sunday Mass in a tent church was celebrated on November 4.

A permanent church project began with a groundbreaking in February 2003 and construction in May. The building was completed on June 30, 2004, and Archbishop Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk dedicated the church on October 2, 2005. Parish establishment, the first tent-church Mass, building completion, and dedication are therefore distinct stages.
