The Songsin Campus of the Catholic University of Korea, at 296-12 Changgyeonggung-ro in Jongno-gu, Seoul, is the university's theological campus and a pilgrimage site of the Archdiocese of Seoul. Centered on the College of Theology and the major seminary, it forms candidates for the priesthood and supports theological and philosophical study.
The campus cathedral houses relics of St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon, Korea's first priest. For this reason the Catholic Church Directory also classifies the Songsin Campus as a pilgrimage site. It is not an ordinary territorial parish, but a place where priestly formation, theological education, and pilgrimage memory meet.
History & origins
The priestly-formation tradition continued by the Songsin Campus begins with St. Joseph Seminary, founded in Baeron, Jecheon, in 1855. After education was interrupted by the Byeongin Persecution, the seminary was re-established at Bueonggol in 1885 as Sacred Heart Seminary and moved to Yongsan, Seoul, in 1887.
After periods of closure and reorganization under Japanese rule, theological education resumed in Hyehwa-dong after liberation. The school was elevated to Songsin College in 1947. During the Korean War classes continued in temporary locations including Jeju and Busan before returning to Seoul in 1953. It became Catholic College in 1959 and, after the 1995 university integration, continued as today's Songsin Campus of the Catholic University of Korea.
