About this place

Garak Market Catholic Church is a market-based Catholic community of the Archdiocese of Seoul, located on the third floor of the fruit-and-vegetable building inside Garak Agricultural and Marine Products Market at 932 Yangjae-daero, Songpa-gu. The Catholic Church Directory retains “(quasi)” in its Korean name, records its establishment on August 23, 1991, and lists St. Joseph as patron.

Unlike an ordinary residential parish, its ministry is shaped around the working life of market merchants and employees. The community is also closely associated with Hasang Paul House, a free-meal ministry serving homeless and vulnerable people, making social outreach an important part of its identity.

History & origins

The Garak Market Catholic community grew from Catholic merchants who moved with the produce trade when Seoul's Yongsan wholesale market relocated to Garak-dong in 1985. As they maintained a life of faith inside the market, they also began helping poor people nearby. In 1990 Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan asked the city to provide space for a free-meal facility, leading to the creation of Hasang Paul House.

The meal ministry began operating in earnest in 1991, while the Catholic Church Directory records August 23, 1991, as the establishment date of Garak Market (Quasi) Parish. The community's history is distinctive for the way market pastoral care and service to the poor developed together.
