About this place

Garak-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Seoul Archdiocese's Songpa District 10 at 34 Songpa-daero 36-gil in Songpa-gu. Its patron is St. Paul Chong Ha-sang, one of the Korean Martyrs.

The parish serves Catholics in Garak-dong and nearby Songpa neighborhoods through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. Its identity is shaped both by the older Ganagol mission-station tradition from which it developed and by devotion to a Korean martyr saint.

History & origins

The roots of Garak-dong Parish reach back to the Ganagol mission station, which had existed since 1903. In June 1982, Jamsil Parish took responsibility for the mission from Macheon-dong Parish, moved it to Seokchon-dong, and renamed it the Garak Mission of Jamsil Parish as preparations for parish status intensified.

The parish's own official history records September 1, 1983, as the date when a temporary church was prepared and 1,619 Catholics were separated from Jamsil to establish Garak-dong Parish. The Catholic Church Directory, however, gives August 16, 1983, as the establishment date. Because two official sources differ, both dates are preserved rather than arbitrarily merged.
