가난한 이들의 작은 자매회
Religious house
About this place
The Seoul house of the Little Sisters of the Poor is a women's religious community at 67 Kkachisan-ro 14-gil in Gangseo-gu, Seoul. At the Jeanne Jugan Home, the sisters live with and care for elderly people who are poor or lack adequate family support.
Following the spirit of their foundress, St. Jeanne Jugan, the congregation regards poor older people not merely as recipients of welfare but as persons to be welcomed with dignity and a family spirit. This location is therefore a religious community and elderly-care apostolate, not an ordinary territorial parish.
History & origins
The Little Sisters of the Poor began in France in 1839 when St. Jeanne Jugan welcomed a poor elderly woman into her own home and cared for her. The congregation developed a distinctive apostolate of living as family with elderly people experiencing poverty and isolation, and entered Korea on September 1, 1971.
The Seoul religious community and Jeanne Jugan Home now operate in Hwagok-dong. Public official Church sources do not provide a verified opening date for this particular Seoul house, so 1839 is treated as the congregation's foundation and 1971 only as its arrival in Korea.
