About this place

Gajaeul Catholic Church is a parish of the Seoul Archdiocese's Seodaemun–Mapo District 2 at 25 Moraenae-ro 15-gil in Seodaemun-gu. It was established on September 17, 1971, and has St. Joseph as its patron.

Today's Gajaeul Parish is the same parish formerly known as Gajwa-dong Catholic Church. It serves Catholics in the Namgajwa and Bukgajwa area and preserves a community tradition that grew from local educational and faith activities in the 1960s.

History & origins

The roots of Gajaeul Parish lie in a night school and Catholic youth activities begun in Bukgajwa-dong in 1965. Regular Mass and catechesis followed, and in 1970 the community secured the present site and formally organized the Gajwa-dong mission station under Susaek Parish.

A temporary church building was prepared in 1971, and on September 17 the mission was elevated to parish status as Gajwa-dong Parish. The same community continues today under the name Gajaeul Catholic Church. Its early history is notable for the growth of a local educational and mission community into an established parish.
