About this place

Gahoe-dong Catholic Church, at 57 Bukchon-ro in Jongno-gu, Seoul, is both a parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul's Jongno District 4 and a pilgrimage church. Established on September 17, 1949, it currently honors St. Francis Xavier together with Blessed James Zhou Wen-mo, Blessed Columba Kang Wan-suk, and Blessed Matthias Choe In-gil as patrons.

The Gahoe and Bukchon area is an important setting in early Korean Catholic history. It preserves the memory of the first Mass celebrated in Joseon by Fr. James Zhou Wen-mo on Easter in 1795. Today the church combines ordinary parish ministry with pilgrimage, using its architecture and historical exhibits to communicate that heritage.

History & origins

The historical significance of the Gahoe and Bukchon area reaches back to 1795, when Fr. James Zhou Wen-mo celebrated an Easter Mass with the early Catholic community. The present parish community itself, however, began after liberation, when plans were made to establish a new parish in the Gahoe area then under Myeongdong Parish.

Part of the present site was donated in April 1949, the first parish Mass was celebrated in June, and the parish was established in September. A new church was dedicated on December 3, 1954. After the aging building was replaced, the present church was completed in November 2013 and dedicated at Easter 2014. The parish later strengthened its pilgrimage identity by honoring early Korean Catholic martyrs and witnesses among its co-patrons.
