About this place
Gaepo-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Seoul Archdiocese's Gangnam District 11 at 25 Seolleung-ro 4-gil in Gangnam-gu. It was established on August 16, 1985, and has the Korean martyr St. Ignatius Kim Je-jun as its patron.
The parish serves Catholics in Gaepo-dong through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. It developed from a mission community prepared by Daechi-dong Parish and later became a mother parish for the new Suseo-dong and Irwon-dong parishes as Catholic communities expanded in southern Gangnam.
History & origins
Preparations for Gaepo-dong Parish began in 1984 when Daechi-dong Parish raised funds to establish mission communities in the Gaepo and Yeoksam areas. A Mass establishing the Gaepo mission was celebrated on July 14, 1985; the archdiocese purchased a church site on July 18; and Gaepo-dong Parish was formally established on August 16. Fr. Ignatius Jeong Chi-yun arrived as first pastor and celebrated the first parish Mass on August 30.
Construction of the present church began in July 1990. The first Mass in the new building was celebrated in November 1992, completion followed in December, and the church was dedicated on September 12, 1993. During this period Suseo-dong Parish separated in 1992 and Irwon-dong Parish in 1994, reshaping Gaepo's pastoral territory.
