About this place
Gaebong-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Seoul Archdiocese's Guro District 16 at 11 Gaebong-ro 18-gil in Guro-gu. It was elevated to parish status in August 1978 and is dedicated to the Resurrection of Jesus.
The parish grew from the Gaebong-dong mission station under Oryu-dong Parish and now serves local Catholics through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. Its identity combines devotion to the risen Christ with the memory of a small household-based mission community that began in the 1970s.
History & origins
The Gaebong Catholic community began on February 1, 1976, when a Gaebong-dong mission station was established within Oryu-dong Parish. Thirty-two Catholics initially gathered in a parishioner's home, and the mission moved twice as the community grew.
The parish's official chronology records archdiocesan approval for elevation to parish status on August 17, 1978, followed by the arrival of the first pastor and a celebration Mass on September 3. The Catholic Church Directory instead lists August 18 as the establishment date. Construction of the permanent church began in 1979, and Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan dedicated it on October 24, 1981.
