응암동 성당

History & origins

The Eungam-dong community began in 1968 as it separated from Susaek Parish. The official history of Susaek records that 1,429 Catholics were transferred to the new Eungam-dong community on August 15 of that year, while the Catholic Encyclopedia and the current diocesan directory give September 23 as the formal parish establishment date. These dates can be understood as successive stages in the separation and canonical establishment process.

The early community erected a tent church on donated land and celebrated its first Mass on the Solemnity of the Assumption. As the parish grew, construction of a new church began in 1988 and the present church was completed in 1991. During this period of growth, several surrounding parishes, beginning with Yeokchon-dong, were later separated from Eungam-dong.

As the building aged, the parish undertook a major interior reconstruction in 2019 and celebrated a thanksgiving Mass for the completed renovation in February 2020. The progression from a tent church to the present renewed building reflects the long-term growth and reorganization of the Eungam-dong Catholic community.
