Dunchondong Catholic Church is a parish of District 9, Gangdong, in the Eastern Seoul Region of the Archdiocese of Seoul, located at 241 Pungseong-ro in Gangdong-gu. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records its establishment date as January 6, 1981, and lists the Immaculate Heart of Mary as its patronal dedication.
The parish grew from a mission community separated from Cheonho-dong Parish and today serves Catholics in the Dunchon-dong area through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish life. Its dedication to the Heart of Mary and the Marian devotion evident in the parish's history are important features of its spiritual identity.
History & origins
The Dunchon-dong Catholic community began on July 27, 1980, as a mission station separated from Cheonho-dong Parish, with about 600 Catholics. It was established as Dunchondong Parish on January 6, 1981, and the following year a church building committee was formed and the site for the present church was acquired.
Ground was broken for the new church on October 2, 1983. The parish moved into the building in October 1984, and Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan consecrated the church on June 1, 1985. The parish chronicle also records that in August 2009 it was designated a Marian pilgrimage church in connection with the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome.
