History & origins

Catholics in the Yeongdeungpo area established a mission station behind the present Yeongdeungpo Police Station in June 1930 and began seeking parish status as the population and number of Catholics increased. On May 10, 1936, the community became independent from Yakhyeon Parish as “Yeongdeungpo Parish,” and a new church was built and blessed in the present Dangsan 2-ga area on January 31, 1937.

Because the first church stood on low ground and suffered from flooding and other location problems, the parish decided to move to Dorim-dong. The new Dorim church was dedicated on July 20, 1941, and after administrative place names changed following liberation, the parish was renamed “Dorim-dong Parish” in October 1946. From 1958 the Salesians took responsibility for pastoral care, and continued growth later led to the creation of daughter parishes including Daebang-dong, Dangsan-dong, Guro 3-dong, and Daerim-dong.
