History & origins

The Dongdaemun Market Catholic community traces its beginnings to 1991, when several Catholics in the Dongpyeonghwa Shopping Complex gathered in Room 651 for a weekly Thursday Mass. In February 1992 the community celebrated its first Mass as the Pyeonghwa Market mission station under Dongdaemun Parish, and in 1993 it purchased Rooms 601 and 602, establishing the base of the present church.

In February 1994 it separated from Dongdaemun Parish and was formally approved as Pyeonghwa Market Quasi-Parish; the current Catholic Church Directory gives February 22 as the establishment date. The name was changed to Dongdaemun Market Catholic Church in January 2005, and a renovation of the church was completed and dedicated in December 2012.
