About this place
Donamdong Catholic Church is a parish of District 4, Seongbuk, in the Central Seoul Region of the Archdiocese of Seoul, located at 120 Goryeodae-ro 7-gil in Seongbuk-gu. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea and the parish's official records identify October 18, 1955, as the date of its establishment and dedication, and St. Patrick as its patron.
Established in the years after the Korean War with assistance from the Missionary Society of St. Columban, Donamdong is one of the long-standing Catholic communities of the Seongbuk area. It continues to serve local Catholics through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish life while preserving the memory of its missionary beginnings and its devotion to St. Patrick.
History & origins
Direct preparation for Donamdong Parish began in 1954, when the Missionary Society of St. Columban purchased the present church site and was entrusted by the Archdiocese of Seoul with evangelization in the area. The church groundbreaking took place on December 26, 1954, and on October 18, 1955, the church was consecrated as Donamdong Parish separated from Hyehwa-dong Parish.
Columban priests provided pastoral care during the parish's early years. The official parish chronicle records that on April 12, 1969, pastoral jurisdiction was transferred to the Archdiocese of Seoul and the parish's first Korean pastor took office. Donamdong has since continued its history as a parish of the archdiocese serving the local community.
