About this place
Doksandong Catholic Church is a parish of District 15, Yeongdeungpo-Geumcheon, in the Western Seoul Region of the Archdiocese of Seoul, located at 20 Doksan-ro 78-gil in Geumcheon-gu. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records its establishment date as August 18, 1978, and lists the Sacred Heart of Jesus as its patron.
The community began as a mission station of Siheung-dong Parish and developed into a parish as the Doksan area grew. It remains one of the long-established Catholic communities of Geumcheon-gu, centered on devotion to the Sacred Heart and serving local Catholics through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish life.
History & origins
In October 1977 a committee was organized to establish a church in Doksan-dong, and a mission station under Siheung-dong Parish began that same month. The current Catholic Church Directory and the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia record August 18, 1978, as the parish establishment date, while the parish's own chronicle records September 6 as the date of the diocesan decree establishing the parish and the arrival of its first pastor.
The parish celebrated a groundbreaking Mass for its church in November 1978. The first Mass in the new building was held in July 1980, followed by the church's dedication on September 21. As the Catholic population increased, the complex was later expanded, with a major enlargement completed in May 1990.
