About this place
Dogok-dong Catholic Church is a parish of District 11 (Gangnam) of the Archdiocese of Seoul, located on Eonju-ro 30-gil in Dogok-dong, Gangnam-gu. It was established on September 7, 2000, and honors the “Unnamed Martyrs” as its patrons.
The parish was separated from Daechi-dong Parish to become an independent Catholic community for Dogok-dong. Its patronal dedication is distinctive in commemorating not one named saint but the martyrs whose names have not been preserved, keeping the witness of unknown believers at the heart of the parish's identity.
History & origins
The present Dogok-dong Parish was established on September 7, 2000, and the official history of Daechi-dong Parish records Dogok-dong as one of the parishes separated from it in 2000. Understanding this history requires distinguishing the present parish from an earlier use of the name “Dogok-dong Parish” in 1979.
The community established from Cheongdam-dong Parish in 1979 was initially called Dogok-dong Parish, but after securing a permanent church site in Daechi-dong it was renamed Daechi-dong Parish in 1981. About two decades later, a new parish for Dogok-dong was separated from that Daechi-dong Parish. The current Dogok-dong Parish founded in 2000 is therefore distinct from the earlier parish that once carried the same name.
