About this place
Dobongsan Catholic Church is a parish of District 6, Dobong-Gangbuk, in the Central Seoul Region of the Archdiocese of Seoul, located at 11 Dobongsan-gil in Dobong-gu. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records its establishment date as February 23, 1996, and identifies the Beatitudes/Sermon on the Mount as its patronal dedication.
The community was formed through the process of separating from Dobongdong Parish. Today it serves Catholics around Dobongsan and Dobong-dong through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish life. Its dedication to the Sermon on the Mount is a distinctive element of the parish's spiritual identity.
History & origins
The formation of Dobongsan Parish took concrete shape in October 1995, when land was purchased under a plan to separate the area from Dobongdong Parish. The archdiocese issued instructions to prepare for the division in January 1996. The current Catholic Church Directory records February 23 as the establishment date, while the parish chronicle records the first pastor's arrival on March 8 and the first Mass and formal start of parish operations on March 10.
A temporary church was begun that March and a completion Mass was celebrated at the end of June. Work later moved toward a permanent church; building approval was granted in September 2000, and the new church was dedicated and consecrated on April 29, 2001, with Archbishop Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk presiding.
