About this place
Dobongdong Catholic Church is a parish of District 6, Dobong-Gangbuk, in the Central Seoul Region of the Archdiocese of Seoul, located at 17 Sirubong-ro 27-gil in Dobong-gu. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records its establishment date as November 6, 1970, and lists the Holy Family as its patron.
The community grew from a mission station under Suyu-dong Parish into an independent parish. Today it serves Catholics in the Dobong-dong area through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life. Its roots as a local mission community and its devotion to the Holy Family remain important parts of its identity.
History & origins
The Catholic community in Dobong-dong began in 1968 as a mission station of Suyu-dong Parish. A mission church was built and dedicated in 1969, and with the growth of the faithful and assistance from the Missionary Society of St. Columban, the community became an independent parish in November 1970.
Because the earlier site suffered from railway noise, the parish purchased the present site in 1977 and began building a new church, which was dedicated in July 1980. Continued growth led to another construction project beginning in 1989, and the new church was consecrated on December 1, 1991. In 1995 pastoral responsibility passed from the Columban missionaries to the Archdiocese of Seoul.
