Deungchon 1-dong Catholic Church is a parish of District 17, Gangseo, in the Western Seoul Region of the Archdiocese of Seoul, located at 61 Gonghang-daero 55-gil in Gangseo-gu. The current Catholic Church Directory uses the name “Deungchon 1-dong (Ji),” records August 16, 1986, as the establishment date, and lists St. Augustine Yi Gwang-heon as its patron.
According to the parish's official introduction, its pastoral territory includes Deungchon 1-dong, Yeomchang-dong, and Gayang 3-dong. It was created as the Catholic population grew with redevelopment and apartment construction in the Gangseo area, and it remains an important local community for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish activities.
History & origins
Plans for Deungchon 1-dong Parish began in 1984 as redevelopment and apartment construction in Yeomchang-dong, Deungchon 1-dong, and Gayang-dong caused the Catholic population to grow. In October 1985 the community purchased a factory building and land at the present site, and the building was renovated for church use in June 1986.
The parish was established on August 16, 1986, through separation from the former Deungchon-dong Parish, and the church was dedicated on August 24. As the Gayang community later expanded, the Gayang-dong mission station under the parish was elevated and separated as an independent parish on September 24, 1992. This sequence reflects the subdivision of parish territories alongside urban development in Gangseo.
