About this place

Dangsan-dong Catholic Church is a parish of District 15 (Yeongdeungpo-Geumcheon) of the Archdiocese of Seoul, located in Dangsan-dong, Yeongdeungpo-gu. It was established on June 13, 1957, and has the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary as its patronal feast.

Formed from Dorim-dong Parish, Dangsan-dong is one of the long-established Catholic communities in the Yeongdeungpo area. Its later history is also linked to the creation of several neighboring parishes, making it an important witness to the expansion of Catholic parish life in southwestern Seoul.

History & origins

As travel to Dorim-dong Church became inconvenient for Catholics in the Dangsan, Yangpyeong, and Yeongdeungpo areas, a committee to build a church in Dangsan-dong was formed in 1955. Land at the present site was purchased in March 1957, a wooden church was built, and on June 13 of that year Dangsan-dong was separated from Dorim-dong and established as a parish.

As the community grew, a new church was built and blessed in 1966. Further growth led to another major building project beginning in the mid-1980s, and on July 15, 1988, a newly built church and rectory were dedicated, establishing the principal physical base of the parish today.
