About this place
Daerim-dong Catholic Church is a parish of District 15 (Yeongdeungpo-Geumcheon) of the Archdiocese of Seoul in Daerim-dong, Yeongdeungpo-gu. It was established on May 25, 1976, and has St. Paul the Apostle as its patron.
The parish grew from a local Catholic community that first attended Mass at a Salesian monastery church, then became a mission station, and finally an independent parish. Built on cooperation between the Salesians and local Catholics, it continues to serve the Daerim area through liturgy, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish life.
History & origins
The Daerim Catholic community traces its origin to 1967, when the Salesians built a monastery church in what was then the Sindorim area and nearby Catholics began attending Mass there. As their number increased, Daerim Mission Station was opened under Dorim-dong Parish on January 1, 1971. The community continued to grow and was elevated to an independent parish on May 25, 1976.
A church site had been purchased in March 1976, and construction of the new church began on September 30. Mass began to be celebrated at the new site while construction was still underway, and on September 16, 1978, the new church was dedicated by Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan. Continued growth later led to the establishment of Daerim 3-dong Parish in 2010.
