About this place

Daeheung-dong Catholic Church is a parish of District 2 (Seodaemun-Mapo) of the Archdiocese of Seoul, located in Daeheung-dong, Mapo-gu. It was established on February 18, 1999, and has the Korean martyr St. Francis Choe Gyeong-hwan as its patron.

A relatively young parish, it was separated from Sinsu-dong Parish to form an independent Catholic community for the Daeheung area. It serves local Catholics through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life while placing the witness of St. Francis Choe Gyeong-hwan at the center of its identity.

History & origins

Daeheung-dong Parish was established on February 18, 1999, by separation from Sinsu-dong Parish. A secondary Catholic parish-information source preserving the early chronology records that the new parish began with 322 households and 923 Catholics and that Fr. Raymund Kim Myung-seop served as its first pastor.

Rather than beginning with a newly constructed church, the parish adapted an existing building. According to the same source, a four-story factory building on the property was converted for church use, and an entrance Mass was celebrated there on July 4, 1999. This rapid transition from parish establishment to an independent worship space forms the core of its early history.
