Daechi-dong Catholic Church is a parish of District 11 (Gangnam) of the Archdiocese of Seoul, located on Samseong-ro 57-gil in Daechi-dong, Gangnam-gu. The current Catholic Church Directory records its establishment on May 31, 1979, and lists “the Grace of the Seven Sacraments” as its patronal title.
The parish began under the name Dogok-dong Parish and was renamed after its permanent church site was secured in Daechi-dong. It later became the mother parish of Yeoksam-dong, Gaepo-dong, Daechi 2-dong, Daechi 4-dong, and Dogok-dong, making it an important center in the expansion of Catholic parish life in Gangnam.
History & origins
Daechi-dong Parish traces its roots to Dogok Mission Station, established under Cheongdam-dong Parish on September 3, 1978. The community grew rapidly and on May 31, 1979, received approval to become an independent “Dogok-dong Parish.” Its first pastor, Fr. Joseph An Sang-in, arrived and celebrated the parish's first Mass on June 14.
After land for a permanent church was purchased in Daechi-dong in December 1980, the parish center moved and the name was changed to “Daechi-dong Parish” on February 24, 1981. A groundbreaking Mass for the new church followed that May, and the completed church was dedicated on May 29, 1983. Continued growth later led to the creation of Yeoksam-dong, Gaepo-dong, Daechi 2-dong, Daechi 4-dong, and Dogok-dong parishes.
