About this place

Daechi 2-dong Catholic Church is a parish of District 11 (Gangnam) of the Archdiocese of Seoul, located on Dogok-ro in Daechi-dong, Gangnam-gu. The current Catholic Church Directory records its establishment date as August 23, 1991, and names the Holy Family as its patron.

The parish emerged from Daechi-dong Parish during a period of rapid population and Catholic growth in Gangnam. It was created so that Catholics in the Daechi 2-dong area could celebrate Mass and the sacraments, receive catechesis, and build parish community life within their local neighborhood.

History & origins

Daechi 2-dong Parish was created against the background of rapid growth in Daechi-dong Parish. The current Catholic Church Directory records the establishment date as August 23, 1991, while the official history of the mother parish records the “separation of Daechi 2-dong, the third daughter parish,” on September 5, 1991.

Because the two official records use different dates, they are not treated here as an identical date for a single event. What is clear is that in 1991 the pastoral territory of Daechi-dong was divided and an independent parish was established for Daechi 2-dong, which then developed as its own Catholic community in Gangnam.
