About this place
The Cursillo Center of the Archdiocese of Seoul is the dedicated diocesan base for formation, retreats, and gatherings of the Cursillo in Christianity movement. Seoul Cursillo describes the movement as a Church movement that seeks personal conversion and the evangelization of one’s environment through the practice of the Gospel.
The center includes a chapel, hall, and meeting spaces that support formation, fellowship, and follow-up activities for Cursillistas. Its essential character is therefore not that of a territorial parish church, but of a diocesan facility supporting a lay spiritual movement and its community life.
History & origins
The Cursillo movement in the Archdiocese of Seoul began with the first men’s Cursillo, held at Seongsu-dong Catholic Church from May 4 to 7, 1967 with the help of Filipino volunteers. After the necessary materials were translated, the third men’s Cursillo was conducted in Korean from August 24 to 27 of the same year.
Beginning with the Diocese of Incheon in 1968, Seoul Cursillo then sent volunteers to other dioceses and contributed to the spread of the movement. The first women’s Cursillo in Seoul was held in August 1971.
Efforts to secure a stable formation venue led to the opening of a center in Dongseon-dong in 1974. Later, in connection with the 44th International Eucharistic Congress held in Seoul in 1989, a commemorative education center was built and used as the Cursillo Center; Church sources state that the present center has been used from 1990 onward.
