This place is listed in the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory as the Queen of Peace Community in Seoul of the Hospitaller Order of St. John of God, a men’s religious community. The Order’s distinctive identity is the spirituality of Hospitality, expressed in ministries that respect and care for the sick, the poor, people with disabilities, and others in need.
In the Gaehwa-dong area of Gangseo-gu, where the Seoul community is located, the Order has developed social-welfare ministries including community living and short-term care for people with developmental disabilities. It is therefore best understood not as a territorial parish, but as a religious community and apostolic base where prayer and common life are joined to social service in the spirit of Hospitality.
History & origins
The Hospitaller Order of St. John of God received ecclesiastical approval in 1572 and entered Korea in November 1958, when five brothers from the Irish Province arrived. They began relief and medical service in Gwangju and opened St.
John of God Hospital in Im-dong in 1960, establishing a base for the Order’s healthcare apostolate in Korea. Its work later expanded from medical care into social welfare, including rehabilitation and care for people with disabilities in Seoul. A significant event directly connected with the present address occurred in April 2013, when Neulpureun House, a short-term residential facility for people with developmental disabilities, was blessed on this site.
The event illustrates how the Order’s spirituality of Hospitality became concrete care for people with disabilities and their families in the Seoul community. The exact date on which the Queen of Peace Community itself was established could not be verified in the public sources reviewed.
