About this place
Cheonhodong Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul serving the Cheonho-dong area of Gangdong-gu. The current official Catholic directory in Korea lists the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Anthony Kim Seong-u as its patron saints. It has long served as a faith community in eastern Seoul, sustaining liturgy and the sacraments, catechesis, and parish communal life.
Located in a densely residential neighborhood, its church and related spaces have functioned not only as places of worship for parishioners but also as points of contact with the wider local community. Visitors can understand it as a regular parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul while also recognizing the accumulated history of a long-established local Catholic community and its role within the surrounding neighborhood.
History & origins
The formal foundation date of Chunho-dong Parish is July 8, 1958. Over the following decades, the parish served as a center of Catholic life in the Gangdong area as eastern Seoul urbanized.
One aspect of its history documented in public records is the opening of wooded parish land to the neighborhood. In 2011, the Seoul Metropolitan Government, Gangdong District, and Chunho-dong Catholic Church carried out a green-space use agreement involving the wooded land behind the church.
Public research records describe it as an early representative case of Seoul’s green-space use agreements, with paths and a pavilion improved to create a community rest area. The project remains a documented example of the parish sharing part of its space with the wider neighborhood beyond the parish community itself.
