History & origins

Cheongnyangni Parish was established in October 1955 from Jegi-dong Parish; the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory records October 9, 1955 as the formal foundation date. As the community grew, it became a mother parish for the wider development of the Church in northeastern Seoul, separating Hoegi-dong Parish in 1962, now Imun-dong, and Dapsimni Parish in 1965, now Jeonnong-dong. From the parish’s early years, the Sisters of St.

Paul of Chartres carried out hospital ministry nearby, work that developed into St. Paul’s Hospital.

As the older church aged, a new church was built at the present location in 1981, and a diocesan event notice records the dedication celebration for the newly built church in December of that year. The parish’s history thus reflects the parallel growth of pastoral ministry, healthcare apostolate, and new parish communities in the area.
