History & origins

The roots of the Cheonggye Market Catholic community are traced to a prayer group called Hanmaeumhoe, formed in 1989 in Pyeonghwa Market in Euljiro 6-ga. The group came under Sindang-dong Parish in November 1992 and, in 1994, was placed under the Pyeonghwa Market quasi-parish together with the Dongdaemun General Market community.

In October 2001, the community was elevated as Cheonggye-Pyeonghwa Market Quasi-Parish, bringing together Catholics of the Cheonggye mission at Pyeonghwa Market, the Dongdaemun General Market, and nearby shopping centers. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory records October 5, 2001 as its official foundation date.

In January 2005, its name was changed to the present Cheonggye Market Quasi-Parish. Because the detailed early chronology is preserved here through a secondary source that re-cites material from the Seoul diocesan bulletin, it has been used cautiously alongside the official directory.
