About this place

Cheongdam-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul in the 11th Gangnam District of the eastern Seoul pastoral region, with St. Peter Yu Tae-chol as its patron saint. Although it now serves the Catholic community of Cheongdam-dong in Gangnam-gu, Catholic life in this area passed through a long mission-station period before the parish was established, linking its story to the pre-development religious history of Gangnam.

Today it functions as an ordinary parish responsible for liturgy, the sacraments, faith formation, and community life. It is notable as an example of an old mission community that grew into a formal parish amid the modern urban expansion of Seoul.

History & origins

Catholic community life in the Cheongdam-dong area is recorded as beginning in 1903 as a mission station of what is now Yakhyeon Catholic Church in Jungnim-dong. The community continued through a long mission-station period under changing parish jurisdictions and, by 1972, was a mission of Yangjae-dong Parish.

After roughly seventy years as a mission community, it was elevated to Cheongdam-dong Parish on November 22, 1973, a date that matches the official foundation date in the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory. Construction of a new parish church began in 1976 and was completed in 1977.

This history shows that Cheongdam-dong Parish did not simply appear with the rapid urban development of Gangnam, but grew from an older Catholic mission tradition south of the Han River.
