History & origins

Chang-dong Parish was established in early 1975 by separation from the Suyu-dong and Dobong-dong parishes. The sources differ slightly in how they date this event: the current Korean Catholic Directory gives February 1, 1975, as the establishment date, while the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia’s history of Suyu-dong Parish says that Chang-dong was separated in January 1975. At that time, about 1,000 registered Catholics were transferred from Suyu-dong to the new Chang-dong community.

As the Catholic population of the Dobong area continued to grow, Chang-dong in turn became a mother parish for neighboring communities. Beon-dong Parish was established in 1983 from territories of Chang-dong, Suyu-dong, and Jangwi-dong, and in 1991 a community that began as a Chang-dong mission station became independent and eventually developed into today’s Chang 5-dong Parish.
