About this place

Bongcheon 3-dong Mission Parish is a missionary parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul located at 10 Cheongnim 2-gil, Gwanak-gu, Seoul. The archdiocesan Pastoral Committee for the Poor refers to it as “Bongcheon 3-dong (Haneuljari) Mission Parish,” and the current Catholic Church Directory in Korea records its establishment on February 18, 1999.

Unlike an ordinary territorial parish, it has a distinct identity within the Archdiocese's ministry among people experiencing poverty. The committee describes missionary parishes as communities that make a preferential option for the poor, cooperate with local cooperative and resident-led initiatives, and work for evangelization and community building among local residents.

History & origins

In 1994, the Archdiocese of Seoul's Pastoral Committee for the Poor organized mission-station and base-community work across eastern, western, southern, and northern areas of Seoul. Bongcheon 3-dong served as the southern mission station. As this urban mission-station system developed into missionary parishes in 1998–1999, Bongcheon 3-dong became an independent mission parish.

The current Catholic Church Directory in Korea gives February 18, 1999 as the establishment date. The committee's historical overview describes the founding as occurring in March 1999. Although the precise month/day notation differs, both sources agree that the southern mission-station community was transformed into a missionary parish in early 1999.
