복자 사랑 피정의집
Retreat center
About this place
Bokja Sarang Retreat House is a retreat and prayer facility of the Archdiocese of Seoul located at 3 Seongbuk-ro 24-gil, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea classifies it as an “education and retreat house” and identifies the Clerical Congregation of the Blessed Korean Martyrs as the responsible religious congregation.
The house functions as a place for retreats, prayer, and faith formation within the apostolate of a congregation rooted in the spirituality of the Korean martyrs. Unlike a territorial parish church, it is a retreat facility under the responsibility of a religious congregation, which is essential to understanding its present identity.
History & origins
Bokja Sarang Retreat House grew out of the Seoul formation facilities of the Clerical Congregation of the Blessed Korean Martyrs. The congregation was founded by Fr. Bang Yu-ryong in 1953, and during the expansion and relocation of its Seongbuk-dong headquarters, the former motherhouse came to be used as a seminary/formation house.
After a new seminary was completed near Suwon Catholic University in 1994 and the Seoul and Suwon formation programs were consolidated, the first Seoul seminary was converted in June 1995 into “Bokja Sarang Retreat House.” It began to serve both the formation of postulants and retreat ministry, and it remains listed in the Catholic directory as an education and retreat house.
