About this place

Beondong Catholic Church is a parish of District 6 (Dobong–Gangbuk) of the Archdiocese of Seoul, located at 945 Hancheon-ro, Gangbuk-gu, Seoul. The current Catholic Church Directory in Korea records its establishment on August 16, 1983 and lists the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary as its patronal feast.

The parish was formed from areas formerly belonging to Chang-dong, Suyu-dong, and Jangwi-dong parishes. It now serves Catholics in Beondong and nearby neighborhoods through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life. Its early years were marked by the use of temporary worship spaces because building restrictions affected the original site, before the community eventually secured its permanent church.

History & origins

Beondong Parish emerged from discussions to divide rapidly growing Catholic communities in the early 1980s. Chang-dong Parish purchased a future church site in 1982 and formed a preparatory committee in July 1983. On August 16, 1983, territory from Chang-dong, Suyu-dong, and Jangwi-dong parishes was transferred to create Beondong Parish.

Construction on the original site was delayed because it lay within natural-green and military-protection zones, forcing the parish to worship in a market basement and other temporary facilities. After the restrictions were lifted, construction of the present church began in November 1991. The building was completed in September 1993 and dedicated on October 24. The long transition from temporary spaces to a permanent church is central to the parish's early history.
