About this place
Banpo Catholic Church is a parish of District 12, Seocho, in the Archdiocese of Seoul, located at 18 Sinbanpo-ro 15-gil in Seocho-gu. It was established as a parish on May 25, 1976, and honors Christ the King as its patron.
It began as a mission community during the apartment development and Catholic population growth of Banpo in the 1970s, and later became an important mother parish in the formation of neighboring communities, including Seocho, Bangbae, Jamwon, Dongjak, Banpo 4-dong, and Bangbae 4-dong.
History & origins
The organized Catholic community in Banpo began on May 22, 1973, when a mission station under Myeongsudae Parish was established during the area's large-scale apartment development. As the Catholic population grew rapidly, the need for an independent parish increased, and Banpo Parish was formally established on May 25, 1976.
The parish subsequently experienced repeated divisions as the Gangnam-Seocho area continued to develop. Its official history records the establishment of Seocho in 1981 and Bangbae in 1982, followed by other parishes such as Jamwon, Dongjak, Banpo 4-dong, and Bangbae 4-dong. This history shows Banpo's role as an important mother parish for the expansion of Catholic communities in Seocho.
