About this place

Banghwa 3-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul located at 16 Banghwa-daero 50-gil, Gangseo-gu, Seoul. The current Catholic Church Directory in Korea records its establishment on September 17, 1999. Its official website uses the name “Banghwa 3-dong Holy Family Catholic Church,” reflecting its dedication to the Holy Family.

The parish was created in response to a growing Catholic population during the development of the Banghwa housing district. It now serves local Catholics through liturgy, the sacraments, education, and community life. Its origin in a mission-station Mass arranged especially for elderly faithful shows how the parish grew from concrete pastoral needs in the neighborhood.

History & origins

The Banghwa 3-dong community began on November 29, 1998, with a mission-station Mass celebrated at Ihwa Kindergarten for elderly members of Gonghang-dong Parish. A church site was purchased in March 1999 and a Mass was celebrated at the planned parish site. On September 17 of that year, Banghwa 3-dong was separated from Gonghang-dong and established as a parish.

The first Mass after parish establishment was celebrated in a temporary tent church in October. Groundbreaking for a permanent church took place in October 2001. The first Mass in the new church was celebrated in September 2005, and the church was formally dedicated in September 2007. This progression from mission-station Mass to independent parish and permanent church defines its early history.
