Banghak-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul located at 145 Sirubong-ro, Dobong-gu, Seoul. The current Catholic Church Directory in Korea records its establishment on August 22, 1990, while Catholic historical sources and parish bulletins identify the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary as its patronal feast.
The parish serves Catholics in the Banghak-dong area through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. Devotion to the Nativity of Mary and the development of its own parish church after its establishment in 1990 are important parts of the community's identity.
History & origins
Banghak-dong Parish was established on August 22, 1990, after separation from Dobong-dong and Chang-dong parishes. Around the time of its founding, a temporary church was built on land provided by the diocese, and parish records were transferred from the two parent parishes to form the new independent community.
After years of growth using the temporary church and related facilities, a permanent church was built and dedicated in September 2003. Sacred artworks by sculptor Jang Dong-ho and stained glass by Choi Young-seop were incorporated into the new church, giving the parish a liturgical space with distinctive artistic elements.
